"A Career to Remember" is the fourth episode of the third season of Recess, which was first broadcast on September 18th, 1999.

Plot[]

Summary[]

The Recess Gang ponder on what they want to be when they grow up, and Spinelli fears she may not have a future.

Main story []

Principal Prickly holds a Career Day assembly with some special guests: an orthodontist named Melvin Donohue (graduate of 1965), a secretary, Mayor Philip Fitzhugh, and lastly, Pat Patterson, who gets stage fright and runs off.

Spinelli finds the assembly boring, but all her friends are convinced that they must have a job when they grow up. Vince wants to be a great athlete in the Intergalactic Games, Mikey wants to be a bard/minstrel, Gretchen wants to clone herself to solve all the world's problems, Gus wants to join the military, and T.J. wants to be the president of the United States and Senor Fusion. However, all Spinelli wants to do is play around like a normal kid, while her friends sharply remind her that if she does not get a job soon, she'll have no good job at all.

That night, Spinelli has a nightmare in which she is old and homeless. Gretchen has cloned herself and holds at least three jobs, Vince has won the Intergalactic Games, Mikey is holding a sold-out concert for well over a year, T.J. is the president of the United States, and Gus is in the military, manning a giant robot.

As soon as Spinelli wakes up, she rushes to school, where she meets up with Pat Patterson, who explains that you do not have to know exactly what you want to be when you're nine years old, since Pat Patterson did not invent Gumoflex shoes until he was already an adult. The episode ends with Spinelli going to school and playing tag with her friends.

Goofs[]

  • Animation/continuity error: When Principal Prickly opens the "Career Day" Event, there are no people standing behind him. Once perspective changes to show them from above, there are people standing behind the guests.
  • Animation/continuity error: While Vince is daydreaming about the Intergalactic Games, the midfield is initially empty. Once he gets ready before the start line, there are aliens standing there.
  • Coloring/continuity error: When Spinelli asks the dog walker about his pay, there is a poodle dog whose chest fur color turns into the background color for a frame (twice).
  • Animation/consistency error: During Spinelli's nightmare, it is visible that she is missing some teeth. However, their positions vary throughout the nightmare or also change into a single line of teeth.
  • Coloring/continuity error: During Spinelli's nightmare, while the police officer Gretchen is talking, the interior of her mouth flashes white.
  • Animation/continuity error: During the ending scene, when Spinelli rushes to meet the gang, she is carrying a handbag. When the perspective changes to show Gus talking, there is no handbag. Afterwards, when Spinelli runs away playing tag, her handbag reappears.
  • Continuity Error: Spinelli claims she could not even draw Blinky the donkey. However, in Spinelli's Masterpiece she was shown to be an excellent artist. It is possible she was just too angry to draw well.

Trivia[]

  • Moral: Kids aren't obligated to think about their future or decide right away what they grow up to be. Even when you reach the point you're grown and ready for a career, your future isn't set in stone.

International Information[]

  • This episode was paired up with "Kindergarten Derby" outside the U.S.
  • The French dub has Vince explicitly want to participate in the Intergalactic Games of 2010.
